Layoffs could affect BHS accreditationI took up this accountability piece upon discovering the potential impact of budget cuts in the district. The high school faced the prospect of loosing its accreditation due to the elimination of a full-time librarian. I conducted extensive research on the accreditation process when reporting on this story, verifying and fact-checking information received from sources. I spoke to the director of admissions at the University of Vermont to see how a lack of accreditation would impact college admissions. This was my first big story published by the Burlington Free Press, a regional newspaper.

Burlington teacher contract negotiationsFrom late August to mid-October of 2016, I continously covered the contract negotiation talks between the Burlington School Board and the teachers' union. Failure to reach a deal after over a year of negotiations led to an imposed contract and potential strike. Covering such a complex topic required me to spend hours digging through documents, and making sense of the proposed contracts for my readers. I attended countless meetings, conducted interviews and filed multiple public record requests with the school district under the Freedom of Information Act. My reporting for the Register became the most fair, detailed and accurate source, prompting community members to read my work instead of turning to the local media.
