My role as senior editor of the BHS Register requires me to oversee all aspect of our publication. I help lead our advertising and marketing push, plan and edit content, in addition to coordinating digital and real-time coverage. I am the go-to leader for my staff, always willing to lend a helping hand with anything from photography to page design. I am the dedicated and passionate hard-worker, who stays in the computer lab after school for hours to get a paper out. Below are a few samples of the work I've done as leader for my publication.
Organizing a Newsroom Visit
I organized a visit for my staff to the Burlington Free Press, our local newspaper this December. We toured the newsroom and pressroom, talked to editors and reporters, and took part in a front-page design activity. As a senior editor I work to create experiences that will make my staff more excited about journalism, and further develop their skills. |

Skill Development Sessions
I frequently create presentations and lead skill development sessions to help my staff expand their journalism toolbox. My sessions include digital and print skills, in addition to the fundamentals of reporting. Having a new adviser and staff has required me to step up and train the future leaders of the newspaper. To the left is a presentation I put together for my staff on social media storytelling, which explains several digital journalism tools and statistical trends regarding media consumption. |
Guest Speakers
I organized a visit to our journalism class by Kyle Finck, who works for the Los Angeles Times as head of their High School Insider program. I serve as the sole east coast representative for the program's student advisory board. This requires me to meet bi-weekly on Skype with fellow board members to plan nationwide content-initiatives. Kyle talked about his past experience in journalism, which has included working for Sports Illustrated and the New York Daily News. He also told us about the program he leads, which is a website that publishes work from student journalists. Kyle also critiqued our first publication of the year, providing us with valuable feedback and ways for improvement.
