As a student-journalist, I always seek out the latest technology and platforms for storytelling. I am constantly seeking new ways to expand the audience of our publication and connect with them in the most effective way possible. Throughout my time working with the BHS Register, I have been a constant innovator. Here are a few samples of the work I have done:
Facebook Live BroadcastsDespite the tool being only months old, I took a risk and gave Facebook Live a try in October 2016. The engagement and feedback we have received from our initial broadcasts was incredible. Livestreaming has allowed us to share news and events visually and instantly.
This fall and winter I have produced over a dozen broadcasts using professional grade audio equipment. We have streamed events ranging from panel discussions to press conferences to school board meetings. The Register's live streaming of updates during the 2016 Burlington teacher contract negotiations received 1,100+ views. We were the only source to be broadcasting live from an important school meeting in October, despite having multiple local television stations present. |
Social MediaFrom Day 1 of working for the BHS Register I have been a constant advocate for using social media. I have developed our accounts into a source for accurate, timely coverage and a way to expand our reach into the community.
As Senior Editor, I have launched live event coverage through our accounts. We assign reporters to cover events, often for the sole purpose of reporting live via our social feeds. I have rapidly expanded our social reach by promoting our accounts through advertising and improving the professionalism of our posts. Since I began posting on our Facebook and Twitter pages, we have gained over 500 followers combined. We have a combined social media reach of over 1000+ people between Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat, which is a powerful way to connect and share news. I pioneered the launch of our Snapchat account in fall 2016, which allows us to easily reach one of our target audiences: teenagers. |
SubscriptionsAs part of an effort to increase and diversify our revenue stream, I launched subscription sales in 2016. Community members can subscribe for $25 and receive all fifteen issues we publish mailed to their door. We have promoted subscriptions through social media, and have already raised hundreds of dollars so far.

Advertisement Sales
I have been the driving force behind advertisement sales for the BHS Register, ever since I first joined the publication as a staff writer. I served as the marketing manager my junior year and sold over $1,700 of ads to local businesses. I helped secure several major clients for future years, including a local college and performing arts center.
Distribution
I have helped expand the Register's print distribution beyond the walls of the high school. We now distribute copies to 15 local businesses around the city, primarily coffee shops and cafes. The newspaper is also available at public schools, the library and several office waiting areas. We have started delivering copies to senior centers as well.
